How to Select an Adventist School

Choosing a school for your child should take more than just writing down the names on pieces of paper and picking them from a hat. You need to look harder and you need to weigh the pros and the cons of each school before you register and before you send in that deposit. An Adventist school might be the best choice for your child and for their education. But to ensure you are choosing the right school for your needs, and for the future of your child, it’s a good idea to keep three things in mind.

Do You Like the School?

Before you sign your child up for a school, it’s a good idea to take them around to see what the school is like, hopefully during an actual school day. You will want to talk with the teachers, with the students, and with the administrators to see what the school is all about. This will allow you to see what is being taught and how the classes are being managed. These ideas are especially important when you want your child to attend the school for a long period of time. The younger your child is, the more impressionable they are. You want to choose a school that is not only teaching effectively, but is teaching in a way that you can support when they are not at school. The school should also have programs and activities that support their beliefs.

Do You Like the Community?

The community as a whole should be enjoyable to you as well. You will want to attend a few functions within the Adventist school community see what you think of others. Since you will be seeing many of these faces over the course of your child’s time in the school, you will want to make sure that these are your ‘sort of people’ or if you don’t quite click with them. Just because you don’t like a few people doesn’t mean your child shouldn’t attend the school, but you will want to make sure the community as a whole is a group you can support and enjoy.

Will You Attend the Church?

The church associated with the school should be a church you would or will attend. This will help you to continue to grow in the community, along with your child. When you have too much separation between the different parts of your child’s life, you will begin to create separating of their friends and their family. Instead, you should try to bring everyone together. Remember, community is what can support your faith and the growth of your child.

When you are trying to create an education for your child in the Adventist community, the choice of the school is an important one. You need to stop and consider as many schools as you need to. The Adventist school you choose is one that you should have faith in, just as much as you have faith in other areas of your life.
